Last night in one of my classes we talked about guide dogs. Believe it or not, the professor had me do a lot of the talking about the subject. There were a bunch of great questions, and one of them that was tough to answer in front of such a big crowd in such a short time. A classmate wondered if - without knowing anything about the program - the process of training guide dogs was 'military like' and dogs are forced into a job they don't want. Not wanting to take up three hours of time on the subject, I explained how much these dogs love their jobs. That they are trained primarily using positive reinforcement and do their jobs best when they love what they do. If they don't love it, they don't become guides. A very simplistic answer to a very difficult question.
This morning as I watched Saxon play with his toys until he passed out on top of them, I had a hard imagining anyone thinking his life is something to be pitied. I'm rather envious of it.
