Giving Blood

blood donation swag: dont even get me started on that button. Pragmatics! Grammar! ugh.  (it says 'Its my first time')

The week before last I noticed a mobile Red Cross Donation bus thingy on campus, but had to run to take a midterm before I had a chance to check it out. Today when I pulled up to school with some extra time to spare and saw the bus parked in the same spot, I headed there first. For various reasons including the fact that I'm kind of a wuss, I've never given blood, but today - I was determined.

Saxon relaxing while I relax and eat snacks

Unfortunately for me, the nurses couldn't accommodate Saxon in the mobile donation station - there was no room in the tiny mobile donation station for him to sit while I donated. The nurse apologized and directed me to any of the permanent donation places (they're BIG and guide dog puppy friendly!) and since I had the time and there's one close to my mom's house, off we went.

Saxon relaxing (again) right before I started and they yelled at me for moving too much.
It was a painless experience, and I'll definitely be back since there are free snacks afterwards. I wish I could say the same about Saxon - with 56 days until I can donate again, there's a decent chance he will be back up on Guide Dog campus, learning how to be a guide dog by then. How can something at once seem far away and too soon?

Saxon works on toy distribution at mom's house after "working" all day with me.

  1. I've had blood drawn from me twice. Once it was blood work to figure out what was wrong with my stomach. It was the most painful thing I have ever experieneced. It felt like they were sucking my life force from me. The second time was completely voluntary. I decided that since I have good blood that I should get over my fear. This involved me having to lie about my weight. I shouldn't have done it. They had to stop before the bag was full because my blood wasn't flowing and because I was looking paler and paler. Haha! They forced me have like one of everything at their snack station. I've come to realise that I'm just not meant to give blood.

  2. Saxon is too cute! I do not know how you do it - to let them go when they are trained.
I tried giving blood before too, but never passed - my iron was too low...
    Have a great Wednesday!

  3. haha Erin, I had the same problem when I was in college - didn't weigh enough to donate - you are amazing for trying to get around it! I've had my vision go black 3 different times today because I stood up too quickly, and I weigh more than enough now! It really does get you.. Saxon looks at me weird as I crouch on the ground until I don't feel so light-headed. And Ivanhoe, I was worried about iron too, but I had a hamburger the night before last and figured I'd be fine.
